Philadelphia Show 2012 set to bring a wave of changes
Visitors to the 2012 Philadelphia International Flower Show will be able to enjoy a tropical experience that blends the latest digital technology with the natural beauty and culture of the Hawaiian Islands. There is a new vibe for the 2012 show which will be most evident in the themed gardens. This year's theme "Hawaii: Islands of Aloha" promises the visitor a break from the traditional as the show moves in new directions. Designers have been challenged to achieve new heights, enabling visitors to have fun, learn more and enjoy an exciting experience. Guests will enter the show beneath dynamic projections of crashing waves and one of the largest and most exciting displays of white orchids and anthuriums ever assembled. Towering palms, bamboo, green walls and a tropical plant canopy will immerse visitors in the Hawaiian rainforest. A 25ft high waterfall will splash down into Pele’s Garden, an island of exotic flowers and plants where performers will conjure volcanic flames.
Known as the Nation's Flower Show, this year’s presentation will take place between 4th and 11th March at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Organised by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) the 2012 show's premier sponsor is Sabaru of America.
"This is a show that will appeal to anyone who enjoys excitement, fantastic design and a full-tilt experience," PHS President Drew Becher commented. "Whether you’re a show veteran or a first-timer, you’ve never seen a flower show like this." New motion graphics to transform waterfalls into lava flows and sculptural forms into breaking waves will be one feature of the show which will highlight Hawaii’s diversity, culture and beauty.
Free lectures and demonstrations take place throughout the show and will include topics from organic gardening, vegetables and roofs and walls to lei-making and quilting. Each day the show will come to life with hula, music and fire dancing performances. Check out Wedding Wednesday and Thursday Girls' Night Out. Mothers and Daughters will be invited to celebrate with the Philadelphia affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Friday. Family day features on the final Sunday – a great way to introduce the young to gardening.
Visitors will also be able to shop for handmade, natural items for home and garden in the Hawaii Village, which will offer demonstrations, crafts and merchandise in the Grand Hall, paying tribute to the talents of the people of Hawaii.
Revenues from the show benefit the year-round work of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and this year will support City Harvest, the innovative programme that brings together a network of urban farmers who provide green job training and grow fresh produce for more than 1,000 families in need each week.
